SOUTH PARIS — Frederick “Fred” V. Oja, 84, of West Paris passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the Maine Veterans’ Home.

He was born in Greenwood, Feb. 25, 1926, the son of Valentine and Tynne Mickonen Oja. He graduated from West Paris High School in 1943. He served in the U. S. Navy as a radio technician working on naval aircrafts from 1943 to 1946. He married Beryl Ellingwood on Nov. 28, 1946.

Fred was a self-employed logger and truck driver. He served the community of West Paris for many years on the budget committee and planning board.

He is survived by his wife of West Paris; their children, Gail Oja of North Andover, Mass., Joel Oja and his wife, Lorraine, of Buckfield, Beth Cantwell of Billerica, Mass., Neil Oja of Oxford, Mass., Jerome and David Oja, both of Brockton, Mass., Julie Oja and Tanya Gillette of Dallas, Pa., and Jackson Oja and Lucio DeBarros, of Salem, N.H.; grandchildren, Tonya and Eric Jacobs of Buckfield, Jacob Oja of Florida, Jason Cantwell and Kristin Cantwell, both of Billerica, Mass., Amber Oja of North Andover, Mass., and Matthew, Luke and Joshua Gillette, all of Dallas, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, Seneca and Siana Jacobs, both of Buckfield; a brother, George Oja of Bass Lake, Calif.; a sister, Julia Williams of San Francisco, Calif.; and special friend, Xavier Trevisani of Salem, N.H.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Vaino; and his sister, Ina Belushin.
