HEBRON — Hebron Academy Head of School John King recently announced that Polly Drown of Leeds has been named a Commended Student in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Drown, a member of the senior class, will receive a Letter of Commendation from Hebron and from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program. As a Commended Student, Drown placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
This year Drown is maintaining a full academic course load of four Advanced Placement courses, including AP Calculus BC and AP Studio Art, and fifth-year French.
She was selected by residential faculty at Hebron to be a student proctor this year, a position awarded to students who demonstrate leadership, communication skills and the ability to work well with their peers. They are instrumental in managing the school’s Residential Life Program.
Drown was elected captain of the field hockey team this fall and plays the violin in the school’s orchestra. A singer with the Heebeegeebees, the academy’s a capella group, she has performed in the all-school musical productions each year. She plans to apply for early decision admission to Columbia University.
Since 2005, seven Hebron Academy students have been named Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Program.
