AUBURN — A break in a 6-inch, cast-iron water main shut down water service to about 25 homes in New Auburn on Thursday.
The break was discovered at about 3:45 a.m. in a pipe near the end of Sixth Street, said Sid Hazelton, district engineer for the Auburn Water District. Crews were on the scene by 4 a.m. and had water service restored by 2:30 p.m.
“We think it was age,” Hazelton said. “It’s one of those older cast-iron pipes and that happens to them sometimes.”
Hazelton said district crews had to isolate the water line while they made repairs, forcing them to shut down service to 25 homes in the area. The outage affected residents of Sixth and Seventh streets and portions of Mill Street.
“Normally, we get these kinds of breaks in the winter due to frost,” Hazelton said. “But this shows it can happen at any time.”
