WILTON — Wilton Free Public Library Director David Olson has generated quite a bit of interest “for a different kind of book club,” he said Tuesday.
The library will sponsor a literary discussion group starting Thursday, Oct. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the Baker’s Market Cafe on Main Street. Between 5:30 and 6:15 p.m., participants may purchase hot popovers and chowder at the cafe, he said.
A short planning session to take care of the organizational needs for the new group, including setting a monthly night, time and place to meet, will be followed Thursday by an open discussion when Olson will share some things happening in the book world, he said.
This is not the traditional book club, he said. Instead of everyone reading one book and then discussing it, the discussions will center on books in general, reading, literature and things that impact people who like to read, he said. The discussions may lend to insights shared by area authors invited as guest speakers.
The ground rules for the group will be decided by the group, but Olson’s idea was to discuss more than books, including movies based on books, the publishing industry and the fate of the paper book. It is a group where passages from works people are reading can be read, but may also include author readings and book signings along with talks about audio books, ebooks and other electronic media, he said.
More than a dozen have already signed up for Thursday’s first meeting. Olson hopes the group will attract at least that many for future meetings.
Those interested may sign up at the library.
