I applaud the decision of the Lewiston City Council to defeat the resolution presented with regard to the Oxford casino (Oct. 20). I have no affiliation with anyone for or against gaming in Maine.
When I first saw the Sun Journal full-page ad supporting the Lewiston project, I thought of that bully boy who pitched a fit and couldn’t wait his turn to use the toy truck. What a selfish ad.
Oxford, and the people who live there, have been tormented in getting to where they are today. If they deserve to have a casino, so be it.
Lewiston may deserve it as well, and if some leaders were not so concerned about padding the city coffers they might think for a minute that multiple casinos in the area would broaden the target market, much like the ski areas in Maine have been tapping into the European markets. Be an optimist.
The city councilors should be objective and honest to their hearts first when making decisions for the well-being of the community.
A few weeks back, there were two Lewiston councilors who I thought had been unfair toward the citizens and property owners of the Lake Auburn watershed. At this latest meeting, I think I saw into their hearts. What is right and what is wrong was identified and they have earned my respect and, I am sure, the respect of a thousand others.
It was an “all-America” decision.
