As the operator of a family business on the Route 26 corridor leading to Oxford, I can’t stress enough the positive economic impact on the region a casino could have. That’s been said before. So has the gloom and doom from the other side. Here is something that may not have been said.

This will pass. Maybe not this time, but gambling has already won the acceptance of the people. State lottery sales are brisk. Slot machines at Hollywood Slots are undeniable proof that gambling is acceptable. Other games are very popular with younger adults, who will eventually vote this in.

There is gambling in Maine now, and there will be casinos in Maine. People don’t have to believe me. They can choose to believe that no casino referendums will ever pass, but casinos will come.

So, who’s going to run them?

I’m supporting Yes on One because real Mainers are behind the initiative — people who have a solid connection to this region; who have looked after their communities, their employees; people who have produced jobs in Maine.

It’s been a hard-fought campaign, and that always takes a toll. There is no guarantee these people will sponsor another initiative.

There is a real opportunity here, not only to introduce table gaming into Maine, but to trust this opportunity to good Maine folks.

This is coming. It’s what the younger generations want. The only gamble is turning away Black Bear Entertainment in favor of unknown partners down the line.
