LEWISTON — George Elliot Barker Sr., 92, died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 23, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Winthrop, Mass., Oct. 7, 1918, the third child of Albert Sr. and Bernice Belknap Barker. His family moved to South Gardiner in 1920. He attended local schools, graduating from Gardiner High School in 1934.
On May 29, 1941, he married Naomi Mae Dunton at her mother’s home in Gardiner. They remained married for 66 years, until her death in November 2007. They lived in South Gardiner for 11 years before moving to their home at 18 Poland Road in Auburn in 1952. Mr. Barker maintained his residence at 18 Poland Road, until September of this year when he moved to Schooner Estates in Auburn.
A World War II veteran, Mr. Barker was a member of the Air Force and served on bases in Texas, Illinois and Florida. Following his discharge in 1945, he served an additional tour with the Naval Reserve.
Mr. Barker was a sheet metal worker who learned his trade at Bath Iron Works. After the war, he returned to his trade at Wheeler Bras in Gardiner and then for 30 years with Hahnel Bros. in Lewiston.
A sports fan, he enjoyed watching his Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots on television and watching his grandchildren play various sports in person. In his retirement, he took up the game of golf and played as recently as Sept. 25 this year. He also enjoyed gardening, solving puzzles and traveling, especially throughout Maine. Known in his family for his sweet tooth, he knew the best place to get ice cream in every town in Maine.
He and his wife, Naomi were active in the Court Street Baptist Church, which became a central part of their lives. He continued to participate in the church’s activities after her death, particularly in the Young at Heart program. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a good man, a loving husband and caring father who lived a life of kindness, guided by his deep faith.
Mr. Barker is survived by his five children, George Barker Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of Harpswell, Judith Foye of Freeport, Richard Barter of Cumberland, Jane Gosselin and her husband, Raymond, of Biddeford and Thomas Barker and his wife, Carol-Lynn Saliba, of Bedford, N.H.; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nicholas Barker, William, Robert and Brandon Faye, Scott and Justin Barker, Benjamin and Andrew Gosselin and Unsey Barker; three great-grandchildren, Abigail and Alexander Gosselin and Gordon Faye; sisters-in-law, Hilda Barker and Georgia Bailey; brothers-in-law, Percy Tibbets and Everett Dunton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years; his brother, Albert Barker; and his sister, Mary Tibbetts.
