LEWISTON — La Rencontre will meet at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, at the Franco-American Heritage Center, 46 Cedar St. The meal served will be a complete turkey dinner, dessert and beverage. The cost of the meal is $7 each person.

After the meal, Denny Breau and Betty Cody will present a set of music and yodeling. Patrons are encouraged to speak only French during the two-hour meal in the newly-renovated Heritage Hall followed by entertainment in the Performance Hall.

During more than 30 years as a full-time musician, Breau has performed with many well-known artists and picked alongside guitarists including Bryan Sutton, Harvey Reid, J.P. Cormier, Pat Donohue, Dan Crary and Steve Kaufman. He has long been in demand as a studio musician and has done jingles and sound tracks for radio and television as well as recorded and produced albums for other artists.

Breau was a member of roots music trio, Turkey Hollow, with Tom Rowe and Tom’s son, Dave, starting in 1998. He was inducted into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004 as the youngest inductee in the history of the organization.

For a brief span during the early 1950s, Betty Cody stood side by side honky tonk queens like Kitty Wells and Goldie Hill. Cody learned to yodel – thanks to a brother’s dare – by listening to Patsy Montana’s 1935 hit “I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart.” She soon found work at local radio stations with first appearances at WCOU Radio in Lewiston at the age of 15.

In the early 1950s Cody reached the height of her career when the act signed to RCA and initiated a series of recordings. Cody’s formative training paid off when “Tom Tom Yodel” became a hit in 1952.

Everyone is invited to attend and reservations can be made by calling Claudette Violette at 786-6936 or the center at 783-1585.
