LEWISTON — L/A Arts invites area artists to submit up to four pieces of artwork for Gallery 5’s January exhibit, “Color, Line, and Form: The Arts of Abstraction,” a show emphasizing nonrepresentational artwork.

Abstract art typically signifies a departure from reality. Historically, abstract art emerged as artistic commissions from the church diminished and patronage from private art collectors and the public created more opportunities for artists.

Artists felt a need to create new artistic imagery that reflected the changes taking place in society around the late 19th century. Today, abstract art exists in many forms.

The juried exhibit will run from Jan. 28 to March 12.  Work must be submitted as .jpg images on a CD or e-mailed to curator Jeanelle Demers, at [email protected], by Dec. 12. A $10 submission fee must be delivered to the L/A Arts office at 221 Lisbon St. A submission form and guidelines are available at www.laarts.org. For more information, call 782-7228.
