RUMFORD — A fundraising performance with everything from music spanning several decades to dancing and comedy is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Rumford Falls Auditorium.

All proceeds will benefit the Jane Holt deFrees Scholarship Fund for local students.

Barney Martin, a former Rumford resident who headlines the Coos Canyon Band, and an active member of the Maine Hysterical Society, said Jane’s husband, Burt deFrees, was critical to his decision to enter the performing arts.

Burt deFrees was Martin’s English drama teacher when he was a student at Mexico High School, as well as Randy Judkins’ teacher.

Martin said Randy Judkins, who leads the Maine Hysterical Society, will also perform at the benefit.

The Coos Canyon Band, now in its eighth year, is comprised of three guitarists and is backed up by the Band in a Box.

“There’ll be tons of music for people to dance to,” Martin said.

Also, a silent auction that includes such items as a handcrafted quilt, a pink tourmaline and an autumn week in Bar harbor, and a 50/50 raffle will be held. Coffee and desserts will be sold.

Martin knew Jane deFrees well.

“She was a very strong natured person with a velvet hand,” Martin said. “She was a very knowledgeable and gracious lady. The scholarship is a lasting legacy.”

Jane deFrees died unexpectedly in 2004. She had been active in many local organizations, as well as a member of the state’s Board of Education. The first scholarship was granted in 2005.

The scholarship fund is managed by the Maine Community Foundation. The scholarship committee is comprised of mostly current or former educators. So far, eight Mountain Valley High School students have received Jane Holt deFrees scholarships.

The Coos Canyon Band appearance is sponsored by the Rumford Performing Arts Committee. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children under 12 and are available at Bartash Card and Gift and at the door.
