FARMINGTON — The town has received a Safety Enhancement Grant of $1,330 from the Maine Municipal Association.
The funds will be used to purchase vehicle stabilizers for Farmington Fire and Rescue. The stabilizers are used to brace a rolled vehicle so that it can’t roll further as rescuers work around it, said Timothy Hardy. He, along with Chief Terry Bell, wrote the grant application for the department.
When the department responds to a rollover accident and the vehicle is on its side, these stabilizers strap to one side so that it can’t roll, he explained.
At a cost of just under $2,000, the grant provides about two-thirds of the cost and the department will absorb the remainder out of the Fire Department budget, he said.
The Safety Enhancement Grant and Scholarship Grant programs offer financial incentives to members of the MMA Workers Compensation Fund, according to a release.
“These grants are used to purchase safety equipment or services that assist in reducing the frequency and severity of workplace injuries. Improving workplace safety for municipal employees saves taxpayers money by reducing lost hours at work, cost of insurance claims and overtime expenses for employees who might have to fill in for injured co-workers,” the release states.
MMA received 84 applications for this grant period and $77,966 was awarded, according to Ed MacDonald, loss control manager for MMA. Grants are awarded in May and October each year.
