PARIS — Roy Gedat said Thursday he’s anxious to get back to work as Oxford County treasurer after his election this week.
The Norway resident will serve his first full, four-year term after narrowly defeating challenger William Hine of Peru on Tuesday. Gedat received 12,278 votes and Hine, 11,635 votes.
“I’m very humbled and thankful for all the supporters,” Gedat said by phone late Thursday afternoon as he picked up his election placards. “I’m excited about getting back to work since I’ve been doing the election for the past few days.”
Gedat, 57, plans to be at the Oxford County treasurer’s office early Friday morning. The term officially begins on Jan. 1. The part-time job pays about $12,000 annually.
Gedat was appointed to the position in March to finish the term of longtime treasurer Mary Anne Prue who moved to the southern part of the state.
Gedat said he plans to continue using technology to implement a more transparent and usable financial system. He will be working with newly hired Deputy Treasurer Dori Coffin and newly hired finance clerk Deborah Martin.
He also advocates the establishment of a charter commission to draw up the first county charter.
“A more modern structure is needed,” he said, adding that many of the processes, fees and other county business tasks were last updated in the 1950s.
“I’m pretty happy and excited,” he said.
