RANGELEY — The Rangeley Public Library will present a program on Maine’s Native American history at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, as part of Native American Heritage month. The program, which will be presented by Raney Bench, curator of education for the Abbe Museum, is free to the public.
Bench will present a summary of the ways in which Native people have thrived and adapted in Maine for thousands of years, some new discoveries being made through archaeology and will then move through time to discuss the current tribal communities and unique relationship the five nations of the Wabanaki have with the state of Maine.
The presentation, entitled “Twelve Thousand Years of Maine Native History,” will include artifacts to touch and explore, a PowerPoint presentation and compare life on the coast with that inland.
The Abbe Museum offers exhibitions and programs on Maine’s Native American heritage. In recent years, it has grown from a small trailside museum, privately operated within Acadia National Park, to a contemporary museum in the heart of downtown Bar Harbor.
