SABARI, Afghanistan — Cpl. Andrew L. Hutchins, 20, of New Portland, lost his life in Khost Province, at combat outpost Sabari, Afghanistan, on Nov. 8, while serving as a military policeman with the U.S. Army.
He received his training in Fort Campbell, Ky., and was assigned to the 3rd Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 101st Airborne Division, Air Assault Group.
He was born in Farmington on April 30, 1990, the son of Jeffrey and Robin.
Andrew graduated from Carrabec High School in 2008, where he was a member of the Willpower Weightlifting program and played basketball and baseball. He was also president of the Jobs for Maine Graduates program. Andrew was a great young soldier, husband, soon-to-be father, son, teacher and student.
He is survived by his wife, Heather L. Hutchins of Solon; his daughter, Allyssa Braelynn Hutchins, due March 8; his mother Robin Norwood and husband, Dwayne, of Waltham; his father, Jeffrey Hutchins and wife, Betsy, of Leeds; two brothers, Adam Poulin of New Portland and Benjamin Hutchins of Leeds; his mother-in-law, Robin and her husband, Michael Crane, of Solon; his father-in-law, Kenneth Couto and long-time companion, Jess, of Riverside, RI; four brother-in-laws, Kenneth Jr. of Riverside, R.I., and Thomas Crane, Dakota Crane and Michael Crane of Solon; maternal grandparents, Sharon Rinaldi and husband, John, of Surry and Thomas Veazie of Blue Hill; paternal grandparents, Lewis P. Hutchins of Blue Hill and Joanna Olsen of Bradley; step-grandparents Paul and Marnie Gardner. Andrew is survived by many more extended family members and friends.
