RUMFORD — Albert “Butch” Barre, 85, died after a brief illness on Nov. 25, at Rumford Hospital.
Born in Rumford, on May 1, 1925, he was the son of Albert and Rosa Grenier Barre.
He attended Stephens High School in Rumford and was a member of the Class of 1944. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he left high school and enlisted in the Navy, where he served over three years in the South Pacific on the Destroyer Class USS Stembel.
He was a resident of Rumford his entire life. On June 14, 1958, he married Lorraine Gionet at St. Athanasius and St. John Church. He was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior.
He worked for 45 years at Boise Cascade; 20 years spent on the No. 9 paper machine, and later as an engineer in the steam plant, until his retirement.
He was a member of the Fr. Ambrose J. Barry Council, 2091 Knights of Columbus; Napoleon Ouellette Post 24, American Legion; and the Robert Shand, Post 1641, VFW.
He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, but most of all he enjoyed time with his family.
He and his wife enjoyed traveling, cruises to Bermuda, and their trips to Foxwoods brought great enjoyment. In recent years, he especially enjoyed his three young grandchildren, often attending school and sporting events; they brought great joy to his life.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Lorraine Barre of Rumford; two sons, Gregory and wife, Susan, of Waterville, and Stephen of Arizona; three grandchildren, Adam, David, and Sarah Barre; sister, Anita Child, of Dixfield; and two brothers, Norman and Emile of Rumford.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Alberta Bosse, Cecile Galarneau, and Dolores MacDonald.
