100 years ago,1910

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Rich of Drummond Street, Auburn, entertained the Jolly Twelve at their regular meeting Saturday evening. Dinner was served at six o’clock and the evening was spent at whist, later in the evening light refreshments were served. The January meeting will be held on the seventh of the month with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Chase of Bridge Street, Lewiston.

50 years ago, 1960

An estimated 1,000 people attended the 13th annual banquet and musical production of the Barker Division of the Knapp Bros. Shoe Mfg. Saturday night at the Lewiston Memorial Armory.

The annual musical is produced with a cast of company employees and is organized by the firm’s employees.

This year’s musical featured music from “South Pacific” and “Oklahoma.” Rehearsals for the production started last September.

25 years ago, 1985

Pioneer Plastics has applied to the state Department of Environmental Protection for a license to operate a state-of-the-art distillation machine to recycle acetone, which is classified as a hazardous waste.

According to J. L. Barber, Pioneer’s vice president of human resources, the new unit would allow “beneficial reuse of a material we use in our plant here; we’ll use the recycled acetone to clean our machinery.”

One DEP official categorized acetone as similar to gasoline to a certain extent, but a lot more volatile.
