LEWISTON — Dented cans, boxes of Fruit Loops past the sell date and boxes of oatmeal with labels written in foreign languages.
These are things that will be hard to find in the Lewiston area since Caswell’s Liquidation Center closed its doors for good.
For nearly two decades, the Main Street store was the first stop for bargain hunters, the poor, middle-class and super-wealthy alike. If you don’t demand that your chips and cat food come in pretty packages, Caswell’s was a place where you could get them at super low prices.
Owned by Dana Caswell, the Lewiston store has apparently been struggling. General Manager Dwight Leighton was not available for comment Friday night, but answers to the closure question could be found at the store.
By dinnertime, Caswell’s was completely dark. Signs were hung in windows next to both entrances.
“Attention Caswell’s customers: Due to the economic times, we are sorry, but we have had to close this store. We are sorry for any inconveniences this may cause you.”
The good news for devoted Caswell’s customers: an hour’s drive will bring you to Caswell’s second store, at 68 Armory Road in Waterville, which remained open Friday night.
