I have heard that one Maine ski area will expand its number of ski trails and will be adding a golf course. That would be good for the year-round business.
Another activity ski areas might want to consider is a BMX race track. There are some ski areas that allow bicyclists to use the chairlifts during summer months. A BMX race track would improve the bottom line profits, even during a lousy economy.
BMX racing is a family sport with no age limit, and a course would fit well with ski areas. There could even be instructors available to teach BMX racing skills, similar to what is available at bike tracks across the U.S.
A BMX race course at the soon-to-close Brunswick Naval Air Station could boost the economy of that area. With approximately a quarter of a million people within a 30-mile radius of Brunswick, BMX racing would make good sense for that area. It is good, family fun for all.
I know it is very early to talk about BMX racing, but it takes a lot of time and planning to build a race course.
