The Sun Journal’s Dec. 31 Encore article on Cheryl Hamilton and her solo performance, “Checkered Floors,” telling of her sexual assault and also of the challenges facing Somali refugees in Maine, is worthy of note.

Many have endured injustices in Maine without presenting this to a jury or the public. Many have complained, then gone on with their lives, even if they are scarred by the injustices, accepting that injustice is part of life, feeling they cannot “fight city hall.”

Of course, there are those in Maine society who are able to muffle the voices of those who injustice has harmed.

Perhaps Hamilton’s “Checkered Floors” will encourage other Mainers to create works of art relating to the injustices and prejudices they have experienced.
