FARMINGTON — The Sandy River Players will present Mary Chase’s classic comedy, “Harvey,” at the University of Maine at Farmington’s Alumni Theater, beginning Jan. 14 and running through Jan. 23.
Best known as a movie starring Jimmy Stewart, the play opened on Broadway in 1944 and ran just over four years. The story revolves around Elwood P. Dowd, whose best friend is Harvey, a rabbit standing more than 6 feet tall who is invisible to everyone else.
Dowd’s sister, Veta, and niece, Myrtle Mae, try to have him committed to a sanitarium, but Harvey has other plans.
Harvey is a pooka, a creature of Celtic folklore who can take on many different shapes. He delights in confusing people, which certainly happens on this stage.
Directed by Dan Woodward, the cast includes Dan Robbins, Deb Mason, Robin Lisherness, Mark Lemos, Rebekkah Church and Natalie Bean.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 14, 15, 21 and 22; and 2 p.m. on Jan. 16 and 23 at the theater on Academy Street. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and children. They may be purchased at Devaney, Doak and Garrett Booksellers. For reservations, call 779-7084.
