PORTLAND — Mad Horse Theatre Company will present Edward Albee’s 2002 Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning drama, “The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?,” opening Thursday, Jan. 20.
Fast-paced, shocking and funny, “The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?” centers around Martin,a highly acclaimed architect who has just turned 50. Along with his loving wife and gay teenage son, he leads what appears to be an ideal life. But while celebrating a prestigious award and a monumental new contract, Martin reveals to an old friend a secret that will bring his well-ordered life crashing down around him.
Mad Horse Theatre Company Member David Currier will make his main stage directorial debut with this drama, which also won the prestigious Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Play.
“The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?” is Albee’s most provocative, daring and controversial play since “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” staged by Mad Horse in 1992.
“The strong characters, high drama and dark comedy have made this one of my favorite projects and a perfect fit for Mad Horse,” Currier said.
The cast of four includes Mad Horse Artistic Director Christine Louise Marshall, Mad Horse Company member James Herrera and guest artists Jaimie Schwartz and Windham High School student Benedetto Robinson.
“The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?” will be presented through Feb. 6 at Lucid Stage, 29 Baxter Blvd. Showtimes are 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday; and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
