AUGUSTA — Following his remarks that upset Maine NAACP leaders, Gov. Paul LePage says he’ll meet with officials for the civil rights group.
A spokesman for the Maine governor told Maine Today Media on Saturday he’d be willing to meet with the NAACP to discuss issues regarding all Maine’s people. Spokesman Dan Demeritt says no specific time for the meeting’s been set.
Rachel Talbot Ross, state director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, says she’s “very pleased” that LePage offered to meet.
LePage drew fire from the NAACP after declining invitations to attend NAACP annual Martin Luther King events. Ross said the group felt it was being neglected by the new governor.
When asked by a reporter Friday to respond, LePage said: “Tell them to kiss my butt.”
