WATERVILLE — Cartha Jane (Myers) Godfrey, 92, of Vassalboro passed away peacefully at the Inland Hospital on Monday, Jan. 24.
She was born in Altoona, Pa., Aug. 8, 1918, a daughter of John F. and Lydia A. (Wilson) Myers. Cartha graduated from Altoona High School, Philadelphia College of the Bible and from Booth Memorial Hospital Nursing School in New York City, graduating as an LPN.
She married her husband of 56 years, the Rev. John Godfrey on May 10, 1942. After their marriage, they resided in West Peru for several years. She followed in his ministry to the communities of West Lebanon, Lee, Greene, Jefferson, Bowdoinham and Woolwich.
She loved to sew and crochet. Cartha had quite an imagination. She was very involved in the American Baptist Convention and was past president of the Baptist Women of Maine and was the national chairman for the White Cross Missions. She took a six-week tour of South East Asia for the American Baptist Convention for Missions.
She is survived by her daughter, Jane R. Hutchins and husband, Myles, of Vassalboro; a sister, Nancy Stevens and husband, Prince, of Gardiner; two brothers, Walter Myers and wife, Sylvia, of Berwick and Rhymer Myers and wife, Ira May, of North Carolina; three grandchildren, Todd J. Fenwick and wife, Melissa, Rachel D. Murphy and husband, Scott and Christopher J. Fenwick and wife, Sara; four great-grandchildren, Erin and Chloe Murphy, Wyatt Fenwick and Zachary Fenwick; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1999; her son, Warrant Officer James W. Godfrey, an ace helicopter pilot for the First Infantry Division killed in action during the Vietnam War in 1967; five brothers; and three sisters.
