O.H. Olfene, proprietor of Olfene’s market in Auburn, recently advanced the wages of each of his clerks one dollar a week. This act on the part of Mr. Olfene was entirely of his own accord and serves to make more cordial and already pleasant relations between Mr. Olfene and his employees.

50 years ago, 1961

NEW YORK — Bates Manufacturing Co. of Lewiston, Maine, said Friday it has made arrangements to purchase additional stock which it hopes will give the company control of Fruit of the Loom Inc., Providence, R.I., textile firm.

The stockholders who have agreed to sell were not identified.

On Jan. 26, directors of Bates, Lewiston, Maine, textile producer, made an offer of $20 per share of common stock and $50 per share of preferred stock to Fruit of the Loom.

25 years ago, 1986

A traveling team made up of New England Patriots football players will play an exhibition game on April 5 at the Leavitt High School gymnasium.

Leavitt athletic director Doug Conn has already made the arrangements for the game. The Patriots will play four 10-minute periods against teams made up of Leavitt boys’ and girls’ teams, parents and teachers.

After the exhibition, the Patriots will remain on hand for refreshments, autographs and conversation.
