LEWISTON —The city of Lewiston was recognized by Coastal Enterprises Inc. (CEI) upon presentation of a Sustaining Community Award recently.

Mayor Laurent F. Gilbert Sr. accepted the award on behalf of the city, an award that is annually bestowed in recognition of an entity that fosters a more sustainable society at the nexus of economy, equity and ecology.

Gilbert said, “Lewiston’s recently adopted strategic plan focuses on the importance of being a sustainable community. From neighborhoods to the development of our riverfront, we recognize that being a sustainable community means seeking and building upon ways to improve a community by strengthening relationships between its economy, environment and society. In doing so, we are committed to reflecting upon our past, being creative in our present and having vision for our future.”

The city has worked with CEI in regard to the owner-occupied housing at 269-271 Park St., the Birch Street Senior Housing Project, additional downtown housing projects and promotion of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for low-to-moderate income workers.
