LEWISTON — It’s not quite a crisis of confidence, but the Lewiston Maineiacs — and certainly the team’s coaching staff — know the only way to break out of their current funk is to attempt to remain positive.
“It’s tough,” Maineiacs’ coach J.F. Houle said. “When you’re on a losing streak, when you’ve won one out of (seven), it’s tough to stay positive, but I think that’s very, very important. We need to keep working hard and pay attention to the little details that make you successful. We have to stay positive. We can’t get down on the little things.”
The Maineiacs have little time to recover from a heartbreaking 4-2 setback in Drummondville on Friday. Lewiston hosts those same Voltigeurs at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Sunday at 4 p.m.
“We’re excited about the game,” Houle said. “It’s getting pretty close in the standings right now, with Victoriaville beating Saint John (on Saturday) they’re catching us. It’s a big game for us.”
Once an almost certainty the Maineiacs would earn home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs, the team’s recent skid has moved them into the eighth overall spot in the standings. With 36 wins and 74 points, the Maineiacs are only four points ahead of the Tigres.
“I think we’ve been working hard, I just don’t think things are clicking lately,” Houle said. “The work ethic is there. I think we need to just keep working hard and doing the little things to be successful.”
Friday’s game was a chippy affair, with the squads combining for 76 penalty minutes — 40 to Lewiston and 36 to Drummondville. There were three fights, 10 roughing minors and several knicks, bumps and bruises to show for them. A pair of Lewiston skaters — Pierre-Olivier Morin and Michael Chaput — are day-to-day with injuries sustained Friday. Houle also confirmed Saturday that defenseman Sam Finn is out “until the playoffs” with an undisclosed injury.
“Players are going to have to keep stepping up,” Houle said. “We need everyone to contribute with all of these players out of the lineup.”
Drummondville has been a thorn in Lewiston’s side the past couple of years, but the Maineiacs do hold a pair of wins against Drummondville this season.
Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday at the Colisee.
