HEBRON — The Hebron Academy Middle School seventh-graders have been building a scale model of a Roman city in a joint history and Latin class project.

Constructed to a scale of 100 with each city block 2.5′ x 2.5′, the project consists of homes, shops, apartments, aqueducts, amphitheatres, baths, government forums and market places.

In addition, there are a number of insulae. An insula, Latin for island, was a city block roughly 80 yards square. Each insula was the home of 800 people and was comprised of houses, apartments and shops. The latter were on the ground floor and opened onto the street.

The students have been working in small groups on different parts of the city, which is being constructed in the school’s Hupper Gallery, giving all members of the Hebron Academy community the opportunity to watch. The students created posters for the wall around the construction site to give additional information about the city.

Latin teacher Cynthia Reedy said her favorite aspect of the project has been seeing the interaction between the upper and middle school students. “It is fun to watch the younger students teaching the older students about their project,” said Reedy.

The school is celebrating 20 years as an independent day school for boys and girls in grades six to eight. For more information, visit www.hebronacademy.org or call 966-5225.
