Why have I not seen any other Class E misdemeanors on the front page of the city section? The Sun Journal posted 12 people’s pictures in September who supposedly committed Class E misdemeanors, but I find it odd I have not seen any other stories and pictures of Class E misdemeanors since then.
Did Sun Journal editors decide to post those pictures, names and addresses because of the nature of the arrest? Or was it more of a dislike for a certain population of the community?
It is difficult to understand that in 2010, with the economic situation, that the city of Auburn would spend as much money as it did on a sting at Whitman Spring Road, all in the name of “cleaning it up.”
One uniformed officer or parked police car would have more of an effect than a sting lasting several weeks consisting of five police officers.
What a waste of Auburn taxpayers’ money, what with their already high tax rates.
The Sun Journal hides behind its First Amendment rights, regardless of who it might hurt or damage. I was under the assumption that Americans are innocent until proven guilty.
The Sun Journal chose to be the judge and the jury before anything went to the court of law. The truth of what actually happened to some of those during the arrests would shock the general public.

Editor’s note: The story the writer is referring to was a Sept. 10 report on a dozen arrests of Maine men on various sex and assault charges. Auburn police made the arrests during a sting operation on the Whitman Spring Road after residents complained they were being approached and intimidated by strangers soliciting sex: https://www.sunjournal.com/city/story/907295
