The city’s municipal beach at East Auburn was open over the weekend but only a small crowd was on hand. It was the first opening of the season for the popular summer spot, but apparently because of the comparatively cool temperatures over the weekend the turnout was small. Residents will soon be able to buy about $22 worth of wholesome food in exchange for $14 and two hours of community service. A 14-year-old Industry boy is organizing a local SHARE New England program, due to begin in July, as a way to earn his Boy Scout Eagle badge. Chris Scerbo said Friday he learned about SHARE from his mother Leiza Scerbo who works with area food banks. “These food banks are for emergency use, but people are coming in steady flows, needing a way to stretch their budget. The elderly especially need it,” she said. An application has been filed with SHARE New England to open up a site in Farmington sponsored by Electronic Grange Network, a project of the Maine Rural Development and Pathways from Poverty. The network is funded by a Kellogg Foundation grant and administered by Abe Kreworuka of Weld. Kreworuka said Friday the SHARE program is working well in Carthage, but is getting overloaded by interested people from the Farmington area. SHARE will operate out of Farmington in July. “A site for food distribution will be announced in the local media,” Chris Scerbo said. SHARE not only provides meats, fresh fruits and staples but people become more aware of community service, of helping others,” said Scerbo.
