President Trump was handed a great economy, “The Envy of the World,” according to financial media. His trade war, lack of coherent economic policy and perhaps low interest in governing when cameras aren’t present have investors close to panic. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has lost more than 2,000 points since Election Day.

Peter Beauchemin: Maine is failing its homeless population
I’m writing this because I’m tired of watching how the state of Maine has neglected its homeless people. I run a small organization that has called upon our governor, our local and state representatives and have gotten nowhere. I have attended meetings in Portland where city officials were there, not listening. I attended a meeting […]
Billy-Joe Smith: Lies must not go unchecked
As I watch the president’s speech, I find myself wondering: why do we, as a nation, continue to let lies go unchecked? I know that fact-checkers scrutinize his speeches, but in today’s polarized climate, that hardly matters. Networks that challenge Trump are dismissed as partisan, deepening our political divide. But regardless of political affiliation, we […]
Tom Heels: Mourning the loss of a heeling experience
I’m writing about the March 9 Maine Sunday Telegram report on the loss of local cobblers. We used to count on these shops for repairing our shoes. As a Heels, I’m particularly disappointed about the decline of these shoe shops. I used to go into a shop to have the heels on my shoes replaced […]
Paula Stotts: Women’s rights are being trampled
I don’t dislike or hate transgender people. What I hate is that women like our mothers fought so hard for women’s rights and protections, especially in sports, and now they are being trampled and destroyed by young men transferring to female. They already have male hormones which make them stronger and faster than genetic females. […]
Paul Baribault: Let there be fairness on youth playing fields
I have a granddaughter in Georgia who competes at a high level on her travel soccer team. Though she’s one of their youngest, she leads her teammates in virtually every statistical category, and making the Olympic team is her cherished goal. I can’t imagine how my son would feel if a collision with a transgender […]
Elaine Kahaner: Canadians break 50 years of vacation tradition
If any of President Trump’s supporters think that his policies will benefit anyone other than himself and his cronies, I hope the following letter from my summer renters might demonstrate how we’ll all pay the price for his megalomania. I own a small condominium in Old Orchard Beach that has been rented for two weeks […]
Leah Johnson: Support a rental registry to protect Maine tenants
As a housing and resource navigator for people experiencing eviction, I see firsthand the effects of the housing crisis on everyday people. Finding affordable housing is increasingly difficult. Even after finding available apartment listings, landlords are not always easy to reach. Sometimes, the contact information for a landlord is no longer current. This creates a […]
Don Robitaille: Support for Rep. Libby’s position on sports
I wish to add my name to the many, many concerned citizens of Maine who oppose allowing men to participate in women’s sports. It is not fair. If I lived in Auburn, I would certainly support Rep. Laurel Libby in any way I could. Don Robitaille, Lewiston
