A promise to tell the truth might imply that others (himself?) have been lying in the past. Why not just be truthful? Honesty is not only the best policy, it is a practice people don’t have to brag about if they have a record of veracity.

Faye Brown: New Lewiston design is ‘dumbest logo ever’
I was born in Lewiston 74 years ago. I loved the city and all it had to offer as I grew up: wonderful places to shop and dine, and at Christmas to see Santa at Peck’s when I was a child, and later to bring my children to see Santa. The new honeycomb design is […]
Fred Huntress Jr.: Poland woodlot sale would benefit conservation
Due to restrictions imposed on all of us by the COVID pandemic, Poland’s April 2 annual town meeting will be held by referendum. All residents were mailed a list of the 30 articles to be on the referendum ballot. Most of these articles were explained briefly, except for Article 29. That article is to authorize […]
David Flanagan: Free speech fundamental to state’s economic growth
There are three bills before the Maine Legislature that fully rub against the spirit of Kennedy’s sentiment of cross border collaboration. LDs 194, 479 and 641 all aim to limit the rights of “foreign owned” companies’ role in Maine’s referendum process. However altruistic this may seem, there is more to the story.

Campaign finance reform is, rightfully, on the minds of many. Particularly those of us proudly independent from a political party, who are concerned with the influence of dark money here in Maine. While concerns with dark money are not new, today there are finally real solutions on the table. One bill currently moving through Washington, […]
Marc Jalbert: Not thrilled with Golden’s COVID plan vote
Am I the only one having trouble understanding Jared Golden’s statement and action on the currently-passed COVID plan, that this plan needed to be more targeted, extending unemployment benefits, funding vaccine distribution and increasing investment in public health infrastructure? Within this plan unemployment benefits are extended; public health infrastructure is addressed with aid to state […]
Susan Lea: Support Pentheny for Poland selectperson
I have lived in Poland since 1976, and just a few years ago I met Jane Pentheny. I appreciate that she would want to protect the character of Poland, with our inviting environment of woods and lakes. I have also been impressed with her interest and understanding of local and state issues that impact the […]
Eric Rohrbach: GOP now ‘party of misinformation,’ ‘no real ideas’
The hypocrisy of Republicans in Washington is astounding. Not one of them voted for Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID stimulus package, complaining that it was bloated and not specific enough to address the problems we are all facing as a nation. The federal government is a blunt instrument, not a scalpel, and to suggest otherwise is […]
