Augusta Police secure the entrance of the Edmund S. Muskie Federal Building in Augusta after a shooting occurred within the building Wednesday morning. Police and investigators at the scene said a man was shot by a security guard screening visitors to the building after displaying a knife. The name and condition of the man by wounded by the guard is still unknown at noon, investigators said. The security company employing the armed screeners, Paragon Systems, Inc., contracts with the Homeland Security Federal Protective Service to scrutinize people who visit multiple federal agencies located at the Augusta building, including the Internal Revenue Service. The shooting victim was initially transported to MaineGeneral in Augusta with an abdominal wound, officers said. Augusta Police said no threat to the public exists.
