Uriah Carver, 16, of Auburn talks with music teacher Brian Gagnon during Camp of Rock at the Great Falls Performing Arts Center in Auburn on Tuesday. Twenty-three students ages 11 to 17 are learning to play rock tunes during the two-week camp. Gagnon, the music teacher at Fairview Elementary School in Auburn, has offered the program for the past 15 years. Students spent Tuesday learning to play the Rush tune "Tom Sawyer," not an easy task, Gagnon said. "But, that's what we do at Camp of Rock. We go for it." Gagnon said Camp of Rock musicians typically play four or five shows each year following camp, but will only play for the public Aug. 14 at Lost Valley ski area in Auburn because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He is looking for more venues able to host a show. From left are Nickolis Post of Auburn, Evan O'Donnell of Auburn, Beck Walker of Auburn, Carver, Dominick Toscano of Turner, Nathan Post of Auburn, Gagnon of Auburn and Leif Walker of Auburn. With 11 guitar players at this year's Camp of Rock in Auburn, music teacher Brian Gagnon asked that some students choose a different instrument to play for certain songs. That did not work well with the Rush tune "Tom Sawyer." "Everybody wants to play guitar for Tom Sawyer," Gagnon said.
