    Steven York, 59, stands Wednesday inside the Bread of Life Ministries' Veterans Shelter. Before he was admitted to the hospital, he'd spent most of the last 10 years, including winters, living in a camper with no heat, electricity, or running water. "I was homeless, didn't have a real place to stay, for quite a while, over 10 years," the veteran said.

    Devin and Margaret clear trash on Nov. 11 as they prepare to take over an abandoned campsite in a homeless encampment in Lewiston. The couple arrived in Lewiston from Concord NH and got immediate work at a temp agency doing day labor. They stayed in a hotel when they arrived and that wiped out their savings. After paying for food, laundry, and cab fare, they do not have enough left over to save up for an apartment.
