Lee Owens, a treatment technician for the Kennebec Water District, collects a water sample Tuesday in Waterville. Samples are being taken to a Scarborough lab to determine if public water provided by the district is safe to consume. Firefighting foam that was used to combat a fire at an apartment complex in Waterville on Monday got into the water system. The foam is a contaminant and out of an abundance of caution the district issued an alert warning customers not to consume its water.
