On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives missed an opportunity. Big time. It was an opportunity for moderates in both parties to coalesce around what has become an alien notion in the House: Working together for the betterment of the country.
Op-Eds
Cal Thomas: Honest talk on immigration
With pictures showing — and border patrol agents confirming — that tens of thousands of migrants are crossing into the U.S. every day without authorization, it is a lie to say the border is secure.
A glimmer of hope in a dysfunctional housing market
I speculated early last month that the resale inventory picture could turn in the fall. The data that has come in since then give me more confidence in that hunch.
Retailers bear some blame in theft epidemic
In August, Dollar General lowered its full year net sales and same store sales forecast in part because of an “approximately $100 million of additional shrink headwind.”
Austin Bay: Time to protect America’s vulnerable sea borders
America’s land border disaster is costly. Unfortunately, America’s shorelines, territorial waters and offshore Exclusive Economic Zones are also vulnerable to piracy, smuggling, terrorism (to include environmental terrorism) and enemy attack in war.
Cal Thomas: The second longest ‘play’
If a government shutdown occurs on Oct. 1, both parties will share the blame this time. Democrats usually force the issue, but now a few House Republicans are refusing (so far) to agree to appropriations bills unless they get their way on spending cuts.
Clarence Page: In defense of old-fashioned Senate dress rules
I was raised to believe you should show your respect for important institutions, jobs and events by dressing in a way that won’t be mistaken for a visiting high school tour group.
Rich Lowry: Skipping the debates has worked for Trump
If Donald Trump was hoping that, if he failed to show, his opponents would tear at each other in pursuit of marginal advantage in the race for second, third or fourth place, it hardly could have gone better.
Froma Harrop: It’s really not all about money
What do we mean by “better off”? Is polo a superior sport to pickleball because it costs more? Not to underplay the benefits of economic security, but there’s a difference between the high life and a good life.
Clarence Page: Are tables turning on the abortion issue since Dobbs? Be careful what you ask for
I’m sure I wasn’t the only TV viewer who stuck a finger in my ear and jiggled it after I heard former President Donald Trump criticize the six-week abortion ban brought about by his Republican opponent Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
