Instead of punishing those who already fill a large percentage of the state’s coffers we should explore other avenues.

Graham Platner’s personal journey is important for Maine | Letter
As a former Janet Mills voter, I’m disappointed in the Mills campaign’s decision to revive decade-old Reddit posts from Graham Platner, which feels less like accountability and more like a political calculation. Those posts surfaced last October, just after the Senate race began. Platner addressed them directly, explained the context and apologized. Voters heard him […]
Attend ‘No Kings’ on Saturday, even if you haven’t before | Letter
There are two basic tenets of authoritarianism: loyalty and lies. With our current authoritarian Republican administration, we could add a third: lawlessness. “… my own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me … I don’t need international law,” says the ruler of this regime, who has insulted our treaties and […]
America is emulating Russia | Letter
Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr recently warned broadcasters that their outlets’ government-issued licenses for use of the airwaves could be revoked if they publicly report information his agency deems as false. The president subsequently endorsed his appointee’s statement. I suppose these dark statements from Mr. Carr and Mr. Trump represent “just another day” in […]
Horrified by war on Iran | Letter
Well, here is our “holy war,” at last, and I am horrified. I’m horrified that Christian leaders have been invited by the White House Faith Office to pray with President Trump in the Oval Office, and that there is a White House Faith Office, a clear violation of the “sacred” principle of the separation of […]
Hannah Pingree’s skills qualify her for Maine governor | Letter
I served with Hannah Pingree in the Maine Legislature. Hannah Pingree should be Maine’s next governor. I don’t have a close personal relationship with Hannah. That is not what my decision is about, nor should it be. Since I served, I have heard regularly from people who know how things work, or don’t work, in […]
Why Graham Platner has my vote | Letter
Long before Project 2025, Republicans joined Democrats in “providing for the general welfare,” making the constitutional imperative a government priority. Through fair tax rates funding essential services, Congress translated the Golden Rule into civic life. We were all the better for it. At the same time that public education and strong unions helped build a […]
Do not twist faith to support war | Letter
God sides with the oppressed, the outcast, never the wager of war.
Restore access to federal laws for Wabanaki Nations | Letter
I was pleased to see the Press Herald drawing attention to LD 395, “An Act to Restore Access to Federal Laws Beneficial to the Wabanaki Nations,” in several February articles. The inclusion of comments and testimonials from Wabanaki representatives and members was particularly important. It is an unfortunate truth that Gov. Mills has a pattern […]
Why is the US wasting billions on Israel’s war? | Letter
It seems like the unjustified “military excursion” against Iran is experiencing mission creep. And let’s call it for what it is: Israel’s war. We have no business wasting billions of dollars on this war. Will Israel repay the U.S. for the money spent on this unwise war? Nope, I doubt it. If it’s such a […]
