After operating remotely for meetings since March, 2020, the Lewiston City Council will return to in-person meetings starting on Sept. 7. The council chambers have been modified with plexiglass panels and distanced seating to promote public safety, and councilors said they’re eager to resume public meetings at City Hall.

A charter review committee is likely to recommend the city of Lewiston move to staggered terms for all elected officials. The committee also supports the idea of a nine-member council, adding two at-large positions. Such moves would likely require an elected Charter Commission.

The move is intended to strengthen rules that require elected officials to reside in the ward in which they were elected.

The city’s first rate hike in eight years will increase the flat rate by 23%, which for most customers will look like an additional $44 annually.

The changes could make it possible for retail stores to sell merchandise on sidewalks and expand outdoor dining to other zoning districts.

The validation referendum on next year’s $93 million plan will be held May 25.
