LOCAL — For the second year, SnowCross is on the agenda for February vacation.

Sponsored by community churches, this year’s event will be held at Titcomb Mountain and features several new activities, plus discounted lift tickets for SnowCross participants. Students in grades six through 12 are invited.

SnowCross will be open Friday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants may attend all or part of the event. The first 50 to register with event planners will receive $5 off their lift tickets or rental equipment. Additionally, Titcomb is offering special $15 full-day lift tickets.

Free activities during the day include a snowboard demonstration by special guests from Maine’s chapter of Snowboarders for Christ (SFC). According to their website, “SFC Maine seeks to be a light to the snowboard and ski culture of Maine. We … are an eclectic crew who enjoys everything from lapping the park, edging cord, reaching mach speed, … shredding powdah (and eating chowdah).”

SFC Maine is in partnership with Sugarloaf Area Christian Ministry (SACM), a full-time church at the base of the Sugarloaf.

Also at no cost, participants may enjoy snowshoeing, snow sculpting, a firepit with cocoa and s’mores, and various games. All registrants will be entered in a raffle for four lift tickets. Free snowboard and ski lessons will be available. Participants are required to bring or rent their own equipment.

Demonstrations at SnowCross 2018 included feats like this one by two snowboarders.

If planning to be at Titcomb for lunch, you may bring your own or purchase lunch at the cafeteria.

Also on tap during vacation, the Phillips Parent/Teacher Organization is hosting a sledding party at the Phillips Elementary School (PES). Weather permitting, this event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23, from 1 to 3 pm. Cocoa and snacks will be provided. Bring your own sled, if possible, as the number available for sharing is limited.

PES/PTO also is conducting a CLYNK fundraiser. From now until March 22, for returnables taken to Hannaford’s in the specially tagged CLYNK bags provided by PES/PTO, Hannaford will match 50 cents for every dollar. Just bag it, tag it, and drop it off. Get your bags at Edmunds Market in Phillips, the Phillips Public Library, or PES.

PES/PTO will host a sign-painting workshop with Rustic Elegance on March 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the school. Cost is $25/person, which includes all supplies.

The PES/PTO meets the first Wednesday of every month at 3 p.m. in the school library. All interested persons are welcome.
