Lewiston and Auburn have become a cultural center. LA/Arts brings in nationally known entertainers. Public theater has staged many wonderful plays each year. Community Little Theater showcases Maine talent, as most recently portrayed in its production of “Phanthom.” The local high schools provide shows each year highlighting the talents of their students.
Each of these organizations has their own venue for performing. Most are currently exploring building new theaters or remodeling existing ones. The cost of these projects will run into millions of dollars. They will also require each organization to raise funds from a relatively small pool of donors.
Imagine what would happen if these groups worked together to build one performing arts center that would be home to two or three theaters. It could be on one site with enough parking for two shows on the same evening. Having one fundraising appeal would be more efficient than many separate appeals. There would be a greater chance of receiving grant money with one project.
Currently there are two locations I envision as viable sights — the Libby Mill building and the old Wal-Mart. Both locations are readily accessible and have plenty of parking. Both are eyesores that could be beautified with this type project.
It does not matter if it is built in Lewiston or Auburn. It does matter that the cities and organizations can work together to improve the entire community.
I hope the organizations can meet and agree that the idea of one performing arts center would be of the most benefit for the community.
