FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior first baseman Paul Tedesco had three hits and three RBIs to pace the University of Southern Maine to a 13-6 win over Union College in the first of two games Monday at Tarry Park.

Brian Marshall belted a two-run double in the fifth inning and an RBI single by Tyler Delorme gave the Huskies three runs. Drew Palmer smacked a two-run single to help widen the gap in the sixth. Sam Handy picked up the mound win for USM.

In the second game, senior shortstop Kyle Bassett’s two-out fly ball was misplayed for an error, allowing sophomore Eric Hemesath to score all the way from first base with the winning run as Coe College edged the Huskies, 3-2. Coe tied the game in the fifth with an unearned run, and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on Travis Johnson’s leadoff solo home run. Tom Hauck went the distance to earn the win for Coe.

Freshman Tip Fairchild was the tough-luck loser in relief of sophomore starter Erik Kent for Southern Maine.

Huskies take two of three

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – After dropping a 4-2 decision to Wisconsin-Whitewater, Southern Maine fought back to defeat Lawrence 7-3 and Middlebury 4-1 in college softball action Monday.

In the middle game, the Huskies snapped a 3-3 tie with four runs in the fourth inning on Kristen Tong’s RBI single and Renee Heath’s three-run double.

Katie Mainville, who quelled a bases-loaded threat with two outs in the seventh inning against Lawrence, started the final game and tossed a three-hitter, striking out 10.

The Huskies (4-4) won the game in the seventh inning on a throwing error that allowed two unearned runs to

score.
