Justin Platten and Scott Duddy spark Bates to a 4-2 win.

LEWISTON – Mark Dobbyn stopped 18 shots and Bates College scored all of its goals in the middle quarters in taking a 4-2 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse Wednesday.

After a scoreless opening quarter, Bates (5-6) scored the opening two goals in the first five minutes of the second quarter. Justin Platten notched the Bobcats’ first goal, and Scott Duddy providing a two-goal cushion with 11:03 to go in the first half.

Colby (1-4) got on the scoreboard with just 2:27 to halftime when Ryan Glennon tallied off a pass from Andrew O’Connell-Shevenell.

The Bobcats scored the only two goals of the third quarter to take a 4-1 lead into the final 15 minutes on tallies by Matt Boccard and Brad Frost.

Matt Dobbyn turned in another solid performance in goal for Bates, stopping 11 shots, while Matthew LaPaglia turned away 15 shots for the Mules.

Tufts 9, Bowdoin 5

BRUNSWICK – Luke Chicco tallied 14 saves in net and Tufts scored six times in the second half on its way to a 9-5 win over Bowdoin.

Tied a 3-3 at the half, the Polar Bears took a 4-3 lead on a goal by Phil Stern at the 11:11 mark of the third quarter. The Jumbos (5-1) answered with three straight goals by Dave Taylor, Matt Malatesta and Casey D’Annolfo to take the lead for good. Grant White made 11 saves for Bowdoin (3-4) while Connor Fitzgerald and Stern each netted a goal and an assist.

Bridgewater State sweeps

SOUTH PORTLAND -Bridgewater State College erupted for 17 runs over the final two innings to post a 19-6 triumph in the opener, and scored five runs in the first inning of the nightcap en route to a 6-0 win and a doubleheader sweep of the University of Southern Maine.

Leading the offense for the Huskies (6-9) was Mike Richard, who had three hits, including a double and a home run, drove in four and scored three, while junior . Senior Josh White, who fanned five through five and a third innings, earned the win for Bridgewater State (6-5).

Bridgewater sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning of the second game, registering five singles, and benefited from five Southern Maine errors to grab a commanding 5-0 lead en route to the shutout.

Husson 10, Bates 4

BANGOR – Husson College scored twice in each of the first two innings and pulled away late to earn an 11-5 win over Bates. Jason Folsom collected four hits and knocked in three runs for Husson (6-7). Drew McKenna led the Bobcats (0-6) with two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.

UMass sweeps pair

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts pitching staff dominated the University of Maine, winning both ends of a double-header, 6-1 and 5-0.

In game one, Brandi Cross provided pitcher Kaila Holtz with all the offense she would need by smacking a two-run home run in the second inning.

Holtz gave up one unearned run over seven innings, striking out 10 Black Bears while yielding just three hits. Jessica Brady had two of those hits for the Black Bears. UMass (19-10) scored once in the first inning of the second game and four more times in the second en route to the sweep. Brittany Cheney and Amy Kuhl each had hits for the Black Bears (10-10).
