FARMINGTON – On Friday evening, the 23 volunteers for Sexual Assault Victims Emergency Services were honored with a delectable dessert reception and awards ceremony at the Old South Church in Farmington.
Among the volunteers getting kudos was June Watson of Jay, who recently retired from volunteer work on the SAVES hotline after 13 years of service.
Bonnie Lisherness of Avon, the crisis response coordinator for SAVES, was also acknowledged for her strong commitment to the organization. In addition to the full-time workweek at the office, Lisherness has volunteered on the hotline for more than 1,000 hours this past year.
Araminta Star Matthews of Farmington was also specially recognized. Matthews, a recent University of Maine at Farmington graduate who now is the office assistant at SAVES, organized V-Day Farmington and directed the three performances of “The Vagina Monologues,” which raised more than $3,000 for SAVES.
“They are incredibly caring people, each of which lead very busy lives and they still commit their time to support victims of sexual assault,” said Pamela Adams, director of client services at SAVES, of the volunteers’ efforts. “It’s worthwhile work, but it is hard work.”
