PARIS – The Oxford County Sheriff’s Department is sending out a warning that scam artists are again attempting to victimize the elderly.
Linda Hooker, TRIAD (The Right Information And Direction) program coordinator, said people are pretending to be bank employees in order to gain access to accounts.
She said last week a female called a Buckfield resident saying she needed the customer’s account number to correct a $300 error.
“The woman was persistent,” Hooker said. “And when the customer refused to give out their number the woman called back twice.
“Everyone needs to be aware that banks and credit unions do not call customers on the phone and ask this type of question,” she said. “If anyone receives a call such as this, report it to your local police department.”
Hooker also suggested:
• Do not give out your bank account or Social Security information to anyone who calls you on the phone.
• If you have a doubt about a call such as this, call your bank or credit union to check it out.
