AUGUSTA – The American Cancer Society’s annual Living With Cancer conference for cancer patients from throughout Maine will be held from 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at the Augusta Civic Center.

Featured speakers will include researcher Dr. Judah Folkman and country music entertainer Kevin Sharp.

Folkman is a pioneering cancer researcher who developed a process known as angiogenesis inhibition in which blood flow is cut off to tumors and tumor growth is slowed or halted.

While he was in high school, Sharp was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer that spread to his lungs. Sharp’s cancer went into remission in 1990. Has since devoted his life to helping and inspiring others who have cancer. He is completing a book, “Tragedy’s Gift.”

Workshop topics will include breast cancer, childhood cancer survivorship, spirituality, art therapy, pain management, hospice, gynecologic cancers and prostate cancer. Attendees are also invited to visit an Art From the Heart exhibit, a display created by Maine residents who’ve been touched by cancer.

Cancer survivors and their family members pay no fee to attend the conference, but may order lunch for $10. For other attendees, the conference fee is $30, including lunch. To register or to obtain a brochure, people can call the Cancer Society, 800-464-3102 and press 3, or 373-3708.
