PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Chelsea Conaboy, a student at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, is the winner of the George Esper scholarship awarded annually by the New England Associated Press News Executives Association in honor of the retired AP special correspondent.

Conaboy will be awarded the $1,000 scholarship at the organization’s spring meeting May 20 in Providence. She is an English-journalism and international affairs major at UNH, where she expects to graduate in May 2004. She worked as an intern at the Sun Journal in Lewiston, Maine, last summer.

The scholarship is named after a longtime AP special correspondent who retired in 2000 after 42 years of service. During his career, Esper covered the Vietnam War and several other major world events. He now teaches journalism at West Virginia University.
