NEW YORK – Raul Mondesi and Alfonso Soriano homered to back a sharp outing by Jeff Weaver and help the New York Yankees to a 4-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday.

Mondesi opened the fifth inning with his third home run of the season on a 2-1 pitch from Pete Walker (1-1), and Soriano led off the sixth with his fifth homer on the first pitch.

After Soriano connected, three straight walks loaded the bases for Hideki Matsui, who delivered a two-run double off Doug Creek.

That was plenty for Weaver (1-0), who allowed just three hits in 7 2-3 innings, struck out six and walked three. Yankees starters improved to 10-0 for the first time in franchise history.

The right-hander had a 15-inning scoreless streak snapped in the sixth when Dee Brown drove in a run with the third of three Kansas City singles in the inning.

After a fan attacked an umpire Tuesday night, there was no trouble the rest of the series.

PITTSBURGH – Jae Seo, his future in the Mets’ rotation uncertain, pitched seven shutout innings for his first major league victory and Mo Vaughn had four hits and four RBIs as New York beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-2 Thursday night.

The only other slam in Baerga’s 11-year major league career came for Cleveland against Oakland on July 20, 1993.
