1923 – 2003

Lewiston-Gerard A. Lemelin, 79, of Campus Avenue, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 19, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Lewiston July 7, 1923, a son of Adelard and Lauza (Lemelin) Lemelin. He was educated in local schools and remained a lifelong resident of this community.

He was a Military Veteran having served his country first in the Army during World War II and later in the Air Force until he was honorably discharged after serving 20 years in the reserves.

On July 3, 1948, he married the former Fernande Dionne in Lewiston.

He was an auto mechanic who worked 45 years for the Triangle Service Station. He then worked a number of years for Screen Printing which later became Commercial Screen Printing.

In addition, he also managed three apartment buildings for Equity Enterprises.

He was a tremendous fan of ice hockey and was well known in Lewiston/Auburn for the many years he spent at the “arena.” From the time that building opened, he was a Minor Official throughout the high school hockey seasons, and also for the other various amateur teams and leagues that played there over the years, including the Maine Nordiques. Thereafter, he did the same every year for the Maine Mariners in Portland. He then spent the first eight seasons with the Portland Pirates doing some time as Minor Official as well as Head Timekeeper until two years ago.

He was a member of Holy Family Church and the VFW. He also enjoyed woodworking in his spare time.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Fernande, of Lewiston; two sons, Stan Lemelin and his wife Karlene of Brunswick, and Bertrand Lemelin and his wife Rachel of Auburn; one grandson, Chris Lemelin of Dover, N.H.; and one sister, Gemma Tancrel of Lewiston.
