BETHEL – As of Friday, suspended Police Chief Darren M. Tripp was reinstated to the position of police chief.

In a press release issued Monday night, Town Manager Scott Cole said Tripp was reinstated following 31 days of paid, administrative suspension for a non-disciplinary action.

Without saying why he suspended Tripp, Cole, who is chief of personnel, said the suspension was in conjunction with the issuance of a confidential letter between him and Tripp.

“Content of this letter was thoroughly reviewed by both parties and their respective legal counsel,” Cole stated in the release. “In the wake of suspension, a series of actions have been identified, for which both parties will be held responsible. The only goal of these actions is to provide the Bethel community with the best possible law enforcement in the future.”

At Monday night’s selectmen meeting, Cole declined to reveal what the fuss was about or reveal the series of actions for which he and Tripp will be held responsible.
