LEWISTON – Bowdoin designated hitter John Clifford hit a three-run home run in the top of the 10th inning Friday to lift Bowdoin to a 4-1 NESCAC baseball win over Bates at Leahey Field.
Clifford deposited a two-ball, two-strike changeup from Bates reliever Shawn Kingman over the fence. Kingman caught Clifford looking at a third strike in the eighth inning.
Jared Lemieux led the top of the 10th with a double. Kevin Bougie was intentionally walked with two outs to set the stage for Clifford.
Bougie, Clifford and Manny Lora each cracked two hits for Bowdoin (13-14). Trevor Powers went the extended route for the win, striking out seven.
Jeff Kowaleski, Drew McKenna and Owen Miehe all singled twice for Bates (6-13).
Tufts 15, Colby 5
WATERVILLE – Evan Zupancic went 5-for-6 with two doubles and three runs scored from the leadoff spot to trigger Tufts’ 15-5 triumph over Colby.
Adam Kacumbras and John McBride each tallied three hits for Tufts (16-8), and Jon Herbert homered.
Dave Martin worked the first seven innings without allowing an earned run for the Jumbos.
Eric Roy of Lisbon went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for the White Mules (7-12-1).
Dan Deacon, Tyler Hales and Jared Cushman each had two hits for Colby.
Softball
Colby doubles up Bates
LEWISTON – Lauren Olmstead and Toni-Lynn Robbins each earned a complete-game victory in Colby’s 3-2 and 6-1 NESCAC softball doubleheader sweep of Bates on Friday.
Annette Caswell slapped three hits to back up Olmstead’s performance in the opener. Wendy Bonner scored twice and had two hits.
Bates scored twice in the seventh. Dayna Krakower and Carla Flaherty clouted back-to-back doubles for the Bobcats. Bates loaded the bases with a walk and single prior to a fielder’s choice.
Amanda Beck drew a walk to bring home Brooke Tardiff, but Olmstead struck out Krissie Whiting to end the game.
Robbins allowed four hits in the finale.
Olmstead cracked a two-run double and Bonner and Caswell each added a run-scoring single in a five-run eight inning.
Kate Hurd had a pair of singles and scored a run for the Mules. Shannon Emerson and Olmstead finished the game with two RBIs apiece.
Flaherty scored the run for the Bobcats.
UMF, UMPI split
FARMINGTON — Dorice Reitchel tripled and drove in three runs to push the University of Maine at Farmington to an 8-0 win over the University of Presque Isle in the second game of a doubleheader.
UMPI won the opener, 6-5, in eight innings. UMF rallied with four in the seventh inning only to fall on a sacrifice fly. Cindy Ravinski drove in four runs for the Owls (6-12).
Reitchel’s bases-loaded triple highlighted a seven-run third inning in the nightcap. Sam Goyette and Mary Berry each drove in a pair in the frame.
Jessica Wenckus tossed a one-hit shutout for the Beavers (11-9).
Salve Regina sweeps
BIDDEFORD — Salve Regina collected 24 hits in an 8-0 and 12-3 doubleheader sweep of the University of New England.
The Seahawks (19-15-1) exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth to back the four-hit pitching of Erin Larrivee in the opener.
Salve Regina notched five runs in the top of the third to erase a 3-1 deficit in the nightcap.
Amber Taylor had five hits on the day for the Nor’easters (9-9).
Women’s lacrosse
E. Connecticut 18, USM 3
GORHAM — Mo Deegan scored four goals and dished out two assists to lead Eastern Connecticut State past Southern Maine 18-3 in women’s lacrosse.
Lindsey White, Emily Kirkland and Mel Fike each scored for the Huskies (4-10).
